New member, no C band yet

Post by Noakes » Fri Mar 30, 2018 9:55 am

Used to work on C band receivers back in the 80s, never had a system myself.
Now I a looking into putting a system in for myself.
Located in Steuben Co. of NYS, rolling hills, etc.
I used to work on CATV and OTA antenna systems back in the day. An OTA for me here would be unwieldy.

Familiar with yagi's, log periodics, bow-ties and rhombics. None of which would be logical.
Hoping a C band will work for us.
Only concern then would be for internet service.

Welcome to our tvro forum!! :spin

There are more FTA channels on c band today than ever before. If you go the c band route, you won't need an OTA antenna as all the networks and diginets are on the big dish and it seems more are being added every month. My advice is to go with a 10' or 12' dish installation and you won't be disappointed. The 8' is a bit small and will leave you hanging on some wild feeds and won't receive most of the programming on the south american birds. The new UHD channels being added on 101 west and elsewhere definitely require a 10' or 12' to lock them. More programmers will start transitioning to UHD in the years ahead, so keep that in mind.

Good luck with your tvro project. You'll find this hobby is addictive as hell... :hammerme:

Hi
I'll tell you what. I love my c band dish. The 1st one I got. I was on a trash route. Picking up yard waste. This old lady come outside to tip us. I saw the 10ft fiberglass dish in the backyard. I had said. You still have a big dish. The lady said it was her deceased husband. And they had it since the 80s. And asked if I wanted it.
So I told her yes. And knew there was programming on them at that time. 2014.
So me and a buddy go and take it down. Mind you I had a small car.
It was like a Ford escort. So we put the 4 panels on the roof and take them home. About 150lbs on the roof.
They go back to get the tripod like stand. Which is over 6 feet tall. Take it apart and put it in the trunk. My car was riding real low in the back. Lol. We think the stand weights about 500lbs.
If I can find the photos. I'll put them up.

But I can say. Find a used one. Free in some cases. You may need to replace the actuator and it's worth getting a dual $50 lnb. This way you can have multiple boxes on one satellite because some of them offer enough channels that you don't really have to change the satellite if you don't feel like it. Or put multiple lnbs on the satellite and you won't have to move it.
We do get free previews every now and then. We had epix. For a month last year. We have had the sports. A few times. NHL, MLB AND NFL.
feeds are great too. I watched the Mayfield fight that was on Pay-per-view. play Mexico satellite for free.
Definitely worth the time
I can say the quality of far better then what is out there with dish, direct or cable. I have seen SD PROGRAMMING that is just as good as hd on the other platforms.
Well good luck. Ask any of us. If you need any ideas. Of boxes to use. Or parts. Or setup. Most of us can help.

Zach.
