ARC

Post by buzzie » Wed Dec 03, 2014 6:18 pm

Hi All,
Am waiting for my new system to arrive and am just starting to get into cu/ku band satellite. I'm wondering where I should start on my lowest arc for my dish. I'm at 45.6 latitude and am starting out with an 8ft and 24" actuator. Thinking any thing below 133 w might be hard to get because of my locating am I going to be missing a lot of channels on C band if I can't get any lower then that.
Thanks
Buzzie

Buzzie, it is your longitude that determines what you can see (not latitude).

If you are on the east coast, you may not get some satellites that are on the extreme west like 139, 137, 135.

People on the west coast have the opposite problem - they may not get stuff on the extreme east such as 22, 20, 15 etc.

People in the middle (Chicago for example), can see the whole arc!

Sorry eldorado your right wasn't thinking of that. I'm around 61 on longitude. Thinking I might will not be able to get anything low because of my horizon in the arc. Will I be losing much if I can't get lower in the arc like channels? What do you guys think about where I should set myself up in the arc? Try the east of me for some satellites? All the advise will be appreciated.

I use this app:

http://www.saveandreplay.com/satcalcview.htm

Enter you latitude, longitude and the longitude of the satellite and it will give you the satellite elevation angle.

For your case Buzzie, it looks like 137 will be just above the horizon and 139 will be below (impossible to receive). So you should be able to get 135 and everything east of that (assuming no obstructions). You may or may not get 137, but not much on that bird except some Alaska channels anyway.

As long as you have no obstacles, you should be able to pull in 5w on c band as you are in the Maritimes. I scan in 11w and I'm right near the Quebec border. You should also be able to get up to 131w if not a bit further.

Thanks Costactc. Thinking the same thing that I'll be able to hit more eastern satellites because of my locating. Not sure what out there on that side but am hoping to get most of North America too.See how it runs and if it looks good might jump up to a bigger dish down the road.

Atlantic sats are mainly circular and would require the insertion of the dielectric plate into your lnbf. Some channels will scan in without the plate on both polarities.
