ABC Feeds transitioning to HEVC 4:2:2 this summer

Post by dishcrank » Mon Apr 15, 2019 10:10 pm

Good news and bad news.

First the good news. They will look awesome. And if they are in 1080p or 4K, even better. :bigsmile

Now the bad news. We won't know how great they look because there are no consumer decoders available for viewing such signals. Commercial decoders cost over $4000! :reallyangry

ABC feeds affected are those on Galaxy 16 and 3C.

Hello,

Any chance we can have a solution made in the USA, or am I missing something?

$4000.00 US is a wee bit too steep,

Why all the doom and gloom? If ABC is transitioning to HEVC, it almost certainly means they will start transmitting in 4K. And if ABC does it, so will CBS, NBC, CW and the avalanche to 4K content will begin. Most of us already own HEVC/4K receivers and I'm sure a workaround will be found for 4:2:2.

Just use a PC as your receiver. I don't know why everyone always insists on using proprietary boxes instead of building a PC based solution to use as their receiver.

It's not 1999 anymore, guys... PCs have HDMI outputs on them now.

I've never had problems playing back any signal from 4:2:2 to 10 bit to Dolby E or those Tandberg phase aligned mpeg-audio pairs that combine into 5.1 tracks like you see on the ABC and NBC feeds. MPC-HC/BE and VLC will play anything.

PC is also future proof. Instead of having to throw the whole PC out when something new comes along I can just put a new tuner card inside it... when DVB-S2X becomes more common I'll just pop in a new tuner card that can decode S2X signals and I'll be all set.

I'm looking forward to these HEVC transitions. Bring on the 4K feeds! ABC has always looked worse than other channels because they use that stupid 720p format instead of 1080i

Most expect to be spoon fed, especially if they are new to this hobby.

Peeps should look into "TVHeadend". You need to build your own linux server, add tuner cards and install this software and configure. After that you can stream everything to your smart TV, including any flavor of 4:2:2 or whatever else. The only downside is the cost of the server and tuner cards (at least $1,500) compared to using an old fashioned receiver ($150).
