Wow! Thanks for the info tek2000. I'll have to review the properties of circular waveguides some more before I can comment, but this is the first time I have seen someone make the connection between the fields in the focal plane and those supported by guides and it makes perfect sense!
I studied the Birkhill scalar some more and it looks like he varied the dimensions of the chokes too. The Chaparral rings all have the same depth. The more I look into this stuff, the more it looks to me like a black art!

I checked RSGB but Steve's contact info isn't listed anywhere. I also checked RWT (Steve's company) but that place looks abandoned. I think it is safe to say that Steve is MIA!
