13.5ft Mesh Satellite Dish (Tek2000)

Post by rusty » Wed Dec 17, 2014 11:22 pm

I noticed on Amazon that Tek2000 is now selling a 13.5' (400cm) Mesh Satellite Dish.

I'm in the market for a 2nd tvro and just wanted to know what you guys think (it retails for $1200 on Amazon but haven't seen it on their website yet).

Here are some pics from Amazon:

They claim you can receive broadcasts from Mars with this one.

Tek,

I saw your other thread about stock finished but couldn't reply (no reply button), so I will speak my piece here.

First off, $999 to ship a dish this size (13.5ft) to someone's door is like a wet dream for tvro enthusiasts...a couple of years ago, SAMI was selling their 8ft model for almost twice this price if you include shipping. Back in the 1990s, Radio Shack wanted several thousand dollars for their 8.5ft model, and if you go back to the 1980s, us first time tvro buyers invested $3-5k!

I don't want to knock your business model, but with a major c-band hack in the works and a major c-band subscription service on the horizon, I don't think you will be able to keep up with sales and will be constantly out of stock on all your models. If I were you, I would invest all my capital in one model dish (say 10.5ft) and fabricate as many as possible :hardwork and raise the price to a level that prevents shortages.

I don't agree. The marketplace is very diverse. There will always be hardcore enthusiasts who want a 13ft earth station regardless of price. On the other hand, there will always be the newbie tvro crowd with a limited budget and limited space who purchase the 8ft (or even a 6ft) c-band system.

It is probably best to cater to the whole customer base as best they can!
