I don't see it as a debacle really, Directv has said for some time that they would like to shut down or sell their dish fed service and they only want to have their streaming (Directv Now) service.

Directv has repeatedly tried to sell and put their dish fed service under Dishnet to put it all under one company in a merger but that has been refused by the FCC.

I agree, it is far, far worse. AT&T changed the way they report their pay TV subs a while back. They still count someone as an "official" paying sub, even if they stopped paying for the service. In other words, the 617,000 sub loss only counts those who called and cancelled. I am sure hundreds of thousands more just stopped paying...The US economy has collapsed. An average of over a million Americans have been applying for weekly jobless claims for the past 10 months. That's nearly 40 million more jobless than last year at this time. Most of these people will stop sending thousands of dollars to DirecTV/Dish to watch satellite TV because they simply can't afford to do so.
