NASA UHD channel hangs.

Post by belter-one » Wed Feb 02, 2022 1:11 am

Hello,

Recently the NASA UHD channel on Galaxy 13 was off-the-air for the first time since we put up our dish in 2017. Someone has been trying to fix this on their end. When the channel is tuned now the audio plays as one would expect, but the video plays for a few frames and then stops. I am able to play a recorded file off this channel, but am unable to stream it. Is anyone able to play this channel with a receiver they are currently using? Any information on this would be helpful.

Cheers,

belter_won

All three are playing just fine for me. The SNR is a bit low for me @ 10dB but no dropouts or pixelization. You probably already thought of it but make sure your drivers are up to date and do a reboot of the box. For me quite often a reboot takes care of video problems.

Hi Arion,

Thank you very much for this useful info. When I record the UHD channel to file, it plays on an Oppo Blu-ray player at 59.94 fps, from about 12 - 14 mbps. I read somewhere that Harmonic updated their equipment and are now broadcasting their data at 60 fps, instead of the 30 fps they did since they went on the air. We have an Edison mio 4k plus receiver, running version 7.0 RC1. When I open the Video Settings window and look at the supported resolutions, they stop at 2160p @ 30fps. They do not include 2160p @ 60fps. Can I ask what receiver you are using, and does it explicitly list 2160p @ 60fps as a supported resolution?

Very interesting, :3stooges:

No go for me on Edision using Openatv 6.3

The UHD Nasa channel freezes right after tuning. The other 2 Nasa channels play fine. Will try to update firmware and see if that helps. :scratchingmyhead:

On the same satellite I also noticed the Bloomberg freezes on ZGemma :madd but plays fine on Edision.

Hi;

Running a similar setup. Have the mio 4k plus receiver with the latest OpenPli 8.1 build with a 4K Tv. Under the video mode I’m running 2160p30 on the display, content is set to just scale and I have allow 12bit and 10bit checked. Under the service information the videocodec is showing 3840x2160 at 60 frames per second progressive scan. It might not be your receiver but maybe your tv?

Even though the service us running 60fps and the receiver only 30fps it shouldn’t be a problem as it downscales fine with the refresh rate set to auto under video settings. If there is a resolution mismatch between the receiver and tv it doesn’t hurt to run the receiver at a standard 1080i setting as I tried that as well and the video plays fine.

If you have a 4K TV then maybe download a copy of OpenPli and put that in a multiboot slot and try that version of Enigma2.

Hi Arion and Fatso,

Thank you all for the very useful information. Our TV supports 2160p @ 60fps. I did not know this until Harmonic updated their equipment recently and started broadcasting the UHD channel @ 60fps instead of 30fps. I have to play the data using an Oppo 4k blu-ray player. I have played the same episode at 30 and 60 fps and compared them in real time. The 60 fps is worth the extra effort to see. Very beautiful. I am going to see if OpenATV and/or OpenPLI plan to release a build with a video driver that supports 2160p@60fps for the ZGemma-H7 and the Edison mio+ 4k. If the onboard memory in the receiver(s) is insufficient, then we will physically open the box and add more. Have you all ever tried anything like this?

Thank you and have a great day,

The gtmedia combo works great on this channel, but the gtmedia V8UHD shut off immediately. Thanks, gestereo

Hello,

After a morning blindscan, I noticed that the NASA UHD channel was playing live on the Edison mio+ 4k we have. A comparison of the two data yields an interesting difference:

yuv420p(tv, bt709) from today's data and
yuv420p10le(tv, bt709) from the data that would not play on and Edison mio+ 4k STB.

I am not sure, but I think the yuv420p10le(tv, bt709) data, a.k.a. 10-bit data looks a little nicer? Not sure as an Oppo 4k disk player is the only thing that plays the 10-bit data in our home.

Good times, :-)

Yup, they must have changed something. The Nasa UHD channel plays perfect on all my receivers now. :thanks
