5.0: Introduction
In this tutorial we'll see how to customize video, audio and epg settings to get the most out of your Enigma 2 receiver. Unlike cable and subscription satellite receivers, everything is modifiable right down to the font size, allowing you to personalize your C Band Satellite TV experience!
5.1: Video Settings
Go to SETUP > VIDEO > BASIC SETTINGS.
5.1.1: Basic Settings
The Video Output should be set to HDMI for North American TV sets. The simplest video settings consist of disabling 'Automatic Resolution' and then manually editing the settings for 480i, 720p, 1080i and 2160p resolutions. The receiver will not upscale or downscale the native resolution and will display 4:3 and 16:9 content exactly as you specify: Auto, Pan&Scan, Letter Box, Pillar Box or Just Scale. You can experiment with the different settings and see what you like best.
NOTE: If your TV screen goes black when editing video settings, you should press the OK button on the remote to cancel and revert back to the previous setting. If the new video settings are acceptable, you can save by selecting yes.
If you get locked out of your receiver (i.e. black screen) when making video changes, you will have to review Tutorial 4 and use OpenWebif to change the video settings and recover.
5.1.2: Video Upscaling
If you have a modern 4K television and wish to take advantage of upscaling, you should select Simple for 'Automatic Resolution'. Upscaling allows you to display the video signal in a higher resolution than the native resolution. This is highly recommended for viewing relatively uncompressed c band satellite master feeds which are are high-bandwidth signals. The more information a video signal contains, the easier it is for your receiver and TV to upscale it, however, we do not recommend you over do it! For example, it is impractical to expect a 480i signal to look anything like a genuine 2160p signal! However, a native 480i signal will 'look' somewhat better when upscaled to 576i or even 720p. A native 720p signal can be upscaled to 1080p and a native 1080i signal can be realistically upscaled to 2160p.
We suggest you spend some time experimenting with the resolution settings and finding something that looks good and works best for you!
5.1.3: Extended Settings
Under EXTENDED SETTINGS, you have the option of adjusting the brightness, parameter, hue, sharpness and other parameters. Once again, we suggest you experiment on some master c band feeds and find what works best for you.
5.2: Audio Settings
Under AUDIO SETTINGS you can make adjustments as required. Most audio parameters are self-explanatory. Under the Audio Language selection, we suggest you select English so the receiver defaults to English when multiple audio streams are available for a particular channel as is common with TVRO.
5.3: Time Settings
Under SYSTEM > TIME SETTINGS, for best results, we suggest you keep your receiver connected to your LAN and select NTP. This will sync the receiver time with an online server instead of a satellite transponder. The reason for this is simply due to the fact that not all satellite operators transmit the correct time information, which will mess up your EPG display.
5.4: EPG Settings
Every Enigma 2 image has a slightly different EPG style. In addition, there are also several EPG layouts within each image. If that weren't enough, there are even a variety of EPG plugins available for download with an endless variety of styles and features. For simplicity, we will discuss the configuration of the three main OpenATV EPGs: Graphical EPG, Single EPG and Multiple EPG.
5.4.1: Graphical EPG Settings
Go to SETUP > EPG > GraphicalEPG Settings
From here you can set the most important parameters for this EPG. We suggest the following settings:
View mode = Graphics (graphics based epg as opposed to text based)
Channel Preview Mode = yes (lets you preview the channel while surfing the epg)
Picture in Graphics = yes (displays video in the top right hand corner)
Base Time = 30 minutes (epg round off time)
By scrolling down, you can also edit the number of rows and the font size. If you want to view more epg information at once, increase the number of rows and reduce the font size so everything fits.
Save all your changes by pressing the green button on the remote.
To view your epg edits, exit all the menus and tune in some channels so the epg can start populating. Press the EPG button on the remote. The Graphical EPG is shown below.
If you add more rows and reduce the font size, the Graphical EPG now looks like the one below.
5.4.2: Single EPG Settings
Go to SETUP > EPG > SingleEPG Settings
The parameters you can edit are fewer here, and the most important are the number of rows and font size. Edit and save by pressing the green button.
To view your edits, exit all the menus and tune a channel. Press INFO and press the yellow button (Single EPG). The result is shown below.
5.4.3: Multi EPG Settings
Go to SETUP > EPG > MultiEPG Settings
Edit like before and save by pressing the green button.
To view your edits, exit all the menus and tune a channel. Press INFO and press the blue button (Multi EPG). The result is shown below.
