Can no longer receive France 24 on a 6' Dish

Post by StatusQuo » Fri Nov 06, 2020 9:31 am

Has there been a power change sometime over the past 6 or 9 months on Intelsat 21 West Beam 4080 H tp 20c ? NHK comes in fine as usual. Nothing has changed on my 10' Pinacle, France 24 is received fine on it. Thanks.

i have used 7 foot in the past that barely get it with 10.4 SNR...with 8 foot i used in the past..it get me more transponders but not stable for anything from 3.7 ghz..it can be locked in at 11.7 snr and drop to 10.7 sometimes in seasons or anything disturbing from high wind or the sun while that bad for anything 3.7 ghz...for 3.8 ghz is a good number while 3.9 requires 11.7 or higher to keep it lock up all day...but for 10 foot ...its 15 snr, that with qual scalar than single scalar that comes with for your LNB, i used quad for other beams i need, like ku and circular cband sats, i realize its only 2 in my location, anyway it drop usually to 14.5 or sometimes 14 when things get bad on me...but for your issue ..6 foot is very hard as 7 foot trying lock other transponders I mention due to higher power requirements

All true. Except that Channels like France 24, China, and North Korea used to come in from I21 on that very same dish, now they don't. Why the difference? NHK still does, along with a religious station. Dish alignment? Gone over it several times? Bad lnbf; Ive changed it out; no difference. Changed receivers. Leaves on the trees? It's november; leaves are gone. What have I missed?

Could be due to a variety of reasons like less power or fec change from the uplink, terrestrial interference, dish out of alignment and more. On my 12 footer, I can lock France 24 with 14.5 dB. I lose the signal when it drops to 10.2 dB, so I don't think a 6 footer would never work for me.

I checked the signal level on a 2.4m(8footer)and the CNR was around 12db.This dish is in no way optimum in performance, but maybe with a signal meter and some tweaking ,you could squeeze that signal you desire from that 1.8m(6footer).

I solved my problem. It took two things. Now all my channels are back. Here's what I did:

1. I spent an hour and a half re-tweeking the azimuth, elevation, and feedhorn settings to within inch of my life. This brought back a few channels but not France 24 nor North Korea.

2. I started swapping receivers. I remembered that last winter I was using a Freesat V7hd from my junk box. Lately I'd tried the Edision, two different Manhattans, and an Ice Crypt. Putting back the old Freesat brought everything back.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Live and learn dept:

DRIVN78415 What receiver were you using when you measured your signal to noise ratios. How did you read the snr? Was it from your receiver? Separate piece of test equipment? If so, which?

Same question for Fatso regarding his signal figures in dB. Since dB figures measure differences against some standard, what is the standard?

Thanks again for sharing your expertise.
