Automated Feed Scanner
Automated Feed Scanner
This might be stretching it but has anyone considered creating an "automated" feed/backhaul scanner?
Let me explain: have a computer control the movement of a BUD and get it to scan every bird say every 10 minutes. If the scanning process discovers a new active transponder, it could upload the frequence and symbol rate to a database and that info can be displayed in a list. Human members could then check the list and add descriptions to the feeds.
What do you guys think? The latest feeds with descriptions could then be added to this sites home page and would be the first thing people see when they come here.
There is a tonne of stuff up there that most of us are missing because we don't even know it is there ;)

Sound like an interesting idea but would require a lot of work and technical know-how...

Re: Automated Feed Scanner
That is one hell of an idea...would certainly make this the # 1 true FTA site for sure.

Fatso,
Absolutely a great idea....... I however wouldn't limit it to just C Band !
Not everybody is a C band fanatic !

Re: Automated Feed Scanner
The possibility was discussed by some of us around here a while back but the project never got off the ground. I think tek2000 was going to donate the dishes needed to people who would help out and one guy was going to design a networked controller we could use to upload our feeds to the net. In theory this was a great idea but in private some felt that if we made feed hunting way too easy the programmers would almost certainly resort to biss encryption and make the hobby much worse for all!Foxcreek wrote:Fatso,

Even though there are a lot of us manually scanning the satellite birds everyday and reporting our findings we probably miss half of the feeds they broadcast, especially breaking news and other stuff!

fatso,
What I would suggest is a group of folks get together and
divide up all the sats ( or just the one's of interest ) each
taking 2 -3 C band and 4 - 5 Ku band and dedicating a system
( dish, feed, receiver, slingbox ( or other internet connect device )
to each. Keep it on the air 24-7. This can be done discreetly.
as long as people don't talk about it online.

Re: Automated Feed Scanner
The original idea was to have a single oversized dish (either 14 or 16ft) equipped with both c and ku feeds that would automatically move from bird to bird every two minutes. During those two minutes it would blind scan the sat and upload the results to a server somewhere that could sort through the data and display any new feeds to bud enthusiasts on the web.
As you can imagine such a project would take a great deal of effort and technical expertise to get off the ground not to mention someone would have to commit the real estate and allocate an oversized dish on a full time basis to make all this happen. I think the guys who run satsignature are in a good position to do something like this...they are already pretty much monitoring every satellite over north america so it wouldn't take much to blind scan for feeds and make the info available on their website...maybe someone can approach them with the idea!

fatso,
Your idea is certainly valid however it's a bit too complex and as a
result it is prone to failures. Dedicated systems as I suggested would
certainly be simpler and thus more reliable.
Also I think if you got sat signature involved BISS encryption is a
virtual certainty ! This has to be done among us discreetly.
I would love to be involved but I just can't support your proposed
system.
